How to Hire a Home Improvement Contractor

Hiring the wrong contractor is one of the most expensive mistakes a homeowner can make. Here’s how to vet, hire, and protect yourself.

Start with Referrals, Then Verify

The best contractor leads come from neighbors who recently had similar work done. A referral is a strong signal — but you must still verify license, insurance, and references independently before signing anything.

Check License and Insurance

Every state has a contractor licensing board with a public search tool. Look up the contractor’s license number directly on the state website. Also request a certificate of insurance that names you as an additional insured — if they refuse, walk away.

Get Three Written Bids

Bids must be in writing and must specify the same scope of work to be comparable. Include materials (brand, model, grade), dimensions, and what is and isn’t included. An oral quote is not enforceable.
